Carved Bone Jewelry

Jewelry hand carved in fine Water Buffalo Bone. The organic water buffalo bone in beautiful ivory-like natural white cream color is carved and polished smooth by hand. Color: White

Our skilled artists and designers have a tribal tradition of carving bone that they have learned from centuries of ancestors whom have handed the meditative tradition of craftsmanship to each forthcoming generation. The process of bone carving is tedious and time consuming, from collecting and choosing the perfect piece of strong, high quality bone, carefully purifying it, and finally after weeks being able to begin carving a strong and detailed piece of jewelry.

The making of bone jewelry is a timeless art with deeply spiritual roots, using the essence of of life to be preserved as jewelry and art. Bone is a beautiful and durable material, it allows for fine detail carving with life-like form and the ability to be polished to a high shine or allowed to have a soft looking finish, and deepens in luster and color with time when worn and cared for.The material itself is difficult to make into jewelry, as the natural shape of the bone and its thickness or thinness limits what can be made with it. From a large buffalo bone, only a very few pieces of jewelry can be made, making bone into jewelry a prized artistry that is far more complex than what one might think. The finished work is a very long-lasting and beautiful thing that is precious to own and wear, and the art of carving is more and more rare with each passing year. Treasure your jewelry as though it were a precious gem made in the heart of the earth, and treat it with care.

We start with the careful selection of the material, create the design, and carve each piece by hand, one at a time, then sand and buff to a fine, soft polish. The smooth finish and careful attention to detail make every piece of this natural jewelry something others will admire and you will love wearing. We hope you enjoy the amazing craftsmanship and range of styles and designs.

The art of Carving Bone

Imagine a clean natural bone: the long whiteness, the hollowness of the center, the organic form... now, we need to take that bone and make into something we can manage to carve into detailed, thick and strong jewelry made to last. Only the process of selecting the bone and preparing the clean material is a very long process. We use a variety of techniques to prepare the blank sections for being transformed by carving into bone earrings and jewelry, and sort them out into various sizes and thicknesses in order to be able to create more than one of each tribal jewelry piece. The carving is almost ready to begin. We carefully etch the design into the bone surface to create a guide for where the bone will be carved. Engraving a three-dimensional pattern onto a bone for carving jewelry is a difficult task that takes skill.

Once the bone has been etched with the outline, the first stage of carving to reveal the jewelry begins. We use a selection of chisels and knives to make the form from the prepared natural bone, being careful and gentle so as not to crack the piece of bone jewelry art in progress. This proses takes a steady and skilled hand, and more patience than one might think. Making a mistake in the middle of carving bone cannot be reversed, so every movement of the carver is critical. As the form of the work is first being revealed from the bone, we must come back and engrave the piece once more, sometimes drawing in details to be carved again. If you have ever seen scrimshaw, you know the detail involved in creating a fine piece of bone carving. After several stages, the bone has been nearly transformed into a piece of jewelry, but still must have the final details filed and sanded into the bone before it can be polished to be worn. For the final polishing stages, we buff the carved bone with a polish and then finally hand finish the jewelry with a soft cloth.

BUFFALO BONE JEWELRY

LATIN NAME: bubalus bubalis.

HARVESTING PRACTICE: The bone we use for our jewelry is recycled from food production and farming practice. The water buffalo of South East Asia is a domesticated animal. It is used to plow fields and carry loads. They are well treated and important to the survival of the native people. When they are too old to work, they are eaten and all part of the animal are utilized for making tools, jewelry, leather, and many other daily items.

how to care for bone jewelry:

Your bone carved jewelry should be cleaned from time to time with a mild soap and water, rinsed thoroughly and dried well. The bone does not need to be conditioned, but may be oiled to protect your bone earrings or jewelry on occasion. Too much oiling will cause the color to deepen into an oily semi translucent yellowish ivory like tone. This may also happen due to the natural oils of your skin absorbing into the material if you wear it daily for many years. If they become too dark, you can whiten them a little bit by soaking in peroxide mixed with baking soda, then thoroughly rinse and dry.
Try not to drop it, sit or step on it. The bone does not need to be conditioned, but may be oiled to protect your bone earrings as we suggest in the beginning of this page. This will cause the color to deepen into an ivory like-tone, not pure bone white.
